PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL LUNCH ARE ON THE GALLERY!
Topics:
Our topic this Autumn Term is 'Good Health'. In Literacy lessons we will be looking at a range of information books that will help us to learn how to look after our bodies and to keep ourselves healthy. These will include: 'A day in the life of a footballer', 'Good Food', 'Eat Well' and 'Cool Food'. In all subject areas we will be learning about keeping our bodies healthy and a trip to Wigan Warriors will give the children the first hand exerience of the importance of exercise and a chance to 'interview' members of the team!
Events:
The Christmas Fair is on Friday 28th November.
The Open Afternoon for the new intake (2009) will be on Tuesday 2nd December.
The Christmas Play will be on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th December in the afternoon.
The Christmas Parties will be on Thursday 18th December.
We will take place in the weekly 'Let's Celebrate' assessmbly in which children will get certificates for good work and behaviour.
A child with exceptional manners will be chosen each week to eat their lunch at the 'Top Table' with Mrs Worthington Head and other staff members.
Mathematics Guidance Notes:
At the heart of Y2 numeracy, is the ability to calculate mentally. Throughout Y2, we emphasise mental methods regularly for all pupils to develop the different skiills involved. These skills include:
* remembering number facts and recalling them without hesitation e.g.
2 + 8 = 10
20 + 80 = 100
200 + 800 = 1000
* using the facts that are known by heart to figure out new facts: for example, a fact like 7 + 5 = 12 can be used to work out 70 + 50 = 120, or 27 + 5 = 32.
* understanding and using the relationship between the 'four rules' to work out answers and check results: for example, 27 divided by 3 = 9, since 9 x 3 = 27.
* drawing on a repertoire of mental strategies to work out calculations like 7 + 5 + 3 = ( 7 + 3 = 10 + 5 = 15 ) 15 and
8 + 9 + 4 = ( 8 + 8 + 1 = 17 + 4 = 21 ) 21
* solving problems like 'If I had a 20p coin and I wanted to buy a banana for 35p, how much more money do I need?'
Although there is a strong emphasis on mental calculation, the way in which children progress from mental to written methods, is very important. Children will use a number line or square to work out their answers in different ways, depending on the numbers involved. For example, the illustrations in Mathematics Gallery One demonstrate two different ways to calculate 16 + 9.
Posing problems and expressing relationships in different ways, and encouraging children to use this language when they talk about maths, is an important stage in developing their calculation strategies and problem solving skills.
Informal Jottings
Pupils are encouraged to make jottings to assist their mental calculations. In Mathematics Gallery Two, you will view typical jottings for calculating 47 + 34. These jottings illustrate the importance of the child understanding place value that is 34 is three tens and four ones.
For subtraction, children are encouraged to use empty number lines which can be viewed in Mathematics Gallery Three. As a child grows in confidence, they may be able to take larger steps as illustrated in the second calculation.
