Eco Schools Programme

At St John's we already teach the children about our environment and how to look after it.  This year we have joined the Eco School Programme to hopefully attain Green Flag Status sometime next year (2009).  Your child will be taking part in classroom activities throughout the year which will encourage them to ‘reduce, re-use and recycle'.  You can find full details of the programme at http://www.eco-schools.org.uk/.  We are focusing on litter, waste and saving energy.  We are also looking at the topics of School Grounds and Biodiversity.

Projects and activities we are undertaking include:

  • Year 2 - entered the Wigan Observer Competition, ‘Chew it, Wrap it, Bin it' - an initiative to highlight the problem of chewing gum discarded on the streets.
  • A Litter Pick will be organised next term as part of the national priority ‘The Big Tidy Up'.
  • Year 2 had a ‘Litter Lesson' provided by Wigan Council's Environmental Education Team.
  • Year 1 - in the Summer Term, this year group have a topic dedicated to looking after all aspects of the environment.

PLEASE HELP WITH OUR PROJECTS

‘Generation Green' - THANK YOU to parents who have already been on line and donated ‘leaves' to school.  Our ‘leaf total' is now up to 1438 but we still have a long way to go to earn our target of 14,765.  Please visit the website at http://www.generationgreen.co.uk/. to pledge further leaves.  There is also an Eco game on-line which your child may enjoy.

Mobile phones and empty ink cartridges  - Please bring in any old phones (with chargers and boxes if possible) and used ink cartridges (not Epson) and place in the recycling box near the front entrance.  The items are being sent to RNIB for re-use and recycling.

What are we already doing in school? - Currently we recycle all our school paper items, catalogues and magazines etc via a company who shred and recycle the items to be remade into paper products.  So far this term we have saved 9 trees by recycling old paper.  School also recycles toner cartridges from printers and the photocopier.

We have just received our green bins from Wigan Council which means we can now recycle all our cardboard, which is a lot!

  • Following a meeting with the Environmental Team at Wigan Council, we will be getting a raised allotment bed built in our wildlife garden in the near future.  The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers will be installing this for us.

  • With the Asda ‘Go Green' vouchers we ordered and received a bird box with built in camera.  We are hoping our nesting blue birds will return in spring and use the box.

  • The new school council had their first meeting this term.  They discussed how the school will develop their ‘Eco Code' and how to ensure the whole school community is aware of what we are doing in school to work towards our Green Flag status.
